Native American History Month

Native American History Month has been observed since 1990, but what do we actually know.  Learning about Native Americans and their contribution to the United States is of paramount importance.  These people have suffered so much hardship throughout American history.  I was shocked to learn that my two children ages 6 and 9 did not know who Native American people are.

We started with a book called We Are Grateful by Traci Sorell.

We listened to an interview of Traci Sorell on Kid Lit TV, which began our learning journey.

Then we went to a library event where we learned about the Navajo Nation.

The kids learned about blankets woven by Native Americans.  Then they practiced a weaving technique using colored paper and patterns.

Finally, I gathered many books to explore this topic. Here are a few:

Learn Greatness with our Veteran's Day Choice Board

Here is our Veteran's Day Choice Board.  I linked YouTube videos that should be able to be played directly from the link.

There is an informative video to begin with.  I also linked some drawing activities and a read aloud.  We have an EPIC books account where I created a group of Veteran's Day books.

We use our choice boards in a variety of ways.  Sometimes we use our choice boards as a way to for my kids to quickly get to content I have curated for them.  Other times it's a way to organize myself with specific topics.

Both my daughter, age 6, and my son , age 9, can access the choice board through our Google Classroom.  We sometimes choose to do them together and other times it is a fun way for them to enjoy choosing what they want to see on their own.

We hope you enjoy!

Learn Greatness with Bats!

Learning about bats can be so much fun!  There are so many misconceptions about bats that we got to debunk.  I think bats are actually kind of cute and I definitely love their insect eating ability.

We started our week reading some wonderful bat stories.

We also watched some informational videos about bats.  I have a few of the videos on our October choice board I attached on an earlier post.

Then we created our craft!  We used toilet paper rolls and black construction paper to wrap the bats. The kids enjoyed creating and playing with them.  I know this is posted a little late however, you can learn about bats any time of the year!
